Elgin National Watch Co. was in operation from 1864-1968 and was an American pocket watch manufacturer. Manufacturing of Elgin watches took place at their facility in Elgin, Illinois.
This Elgin timepiece was crafted in Elgin, Illinois, and completed in 1914, at the dawn of World War I, when reliable timepieces were essential for coordination in military and industrial efforts. It is powered by Elgin’s in-house 15-jewel Grade 354 movement, which was produced from 1907 to 1917. The movement features 15 jewels, decorated ratchet and crown wheels, an intricate balance pattern, and beautiful damaskeening. The movement has been restored and custom refinished with striking blue accents, achieved by thermally coloring the iron-based parts by hand. The hands have also been restored to their original heat-blue hue using this same process. The brass jewel settings have been returned to their original gold tone, and the black enamel lettering has been meticulously restored by hand. The porcelain-enamel Elgin dial is in flawless condition, featuring refined Roman numerals. The dial’s pristine white surface and golden hands provide a striking contrast with the numerals.
This timepiece is cased in a 36 mm 316L stainless steel wristwatch conversion case, ensuring comfortable wear for those who prefer a smaller profile. The case, equipped with gaskets, offers water resistance up to 10 meters, although it is advisable to remove the watch before engaging in water activities. Having undergone thorough servicing, this timepiece is ready for use. To honor its history, the original gold-filled hunter case will also be provided.
